Place to visit:

• WAT PHUTTHAISAWAN. The royal monastery where the white prang (Khmer-style pagoda) is located is in the middle of the old compound. King U-thong, the founder of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, built this temple at the site where he first settled before establishing Ayutthaya as the capital city in 1350.
• WAT MAHATHAT, one of the most impressive Buddha’s heads at the root of the Bodhi tree, was also the royal monastery and served as the residence of the supreme monk in the early Ayutthaya period.
• WAT PHRA SRI SANPHET, The largest and the most important temple within the Royal Palace compound in Ayutthaya, and the prototype of the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.
• VIHARA PHRA MONGKHON BOPHIT, Located next to WAT PHRA SRI SANPHET. A large bronze Buddha image was originally enshrined in the open area outside the royal monastery and later covered by this chapel.
